Last port before home, Saturday, Nov. 3rd, Funchal. You may recall last year when we visited this island we fell in love with it. We said if we knew about it when we were younger we probably would have spent a lot of vacations here or even bought a small apartment on the island. I’m not going to revisit the Funchal overall because you can do that by scanning down to our last cruise ( it was the second to last port) in Nov./Dec. 2011. Susy and I just went in to the small port city, had our lunch, and enjoyed a fair that was going on. There were booths along at least 5 or 10 city blocks with everything from wine, lace, and bird whistles for sale.
Here’s a bunch of different photos I took as we went along. First a view of the port from the ship:
Two port signs, I love the second:
Here’s a look back at the Nieuw Amsterdam:
To our surprise the downtown area had been completely re-paved with a beautiful black and white stone. Here’s a bunch of street scenes with the booths from the local fair on one side and sidewalk cafes down the center:
You can see Susy was in 7th heaven with all those booths, one after the other with jewelry, lace, wine, etc.. Of course, we had to stop for lunch and a beer at one of the sidewalk cafes:
Look at the front of this café/pizzeria:
We ran across a beautiful, tree lined street:
A church in the center of the downtown:
and finally, my traveling companion in the middle of a park in front of a pond with swans:
Well that’s it folks. From here we have 7 days to cross the Atlantic and then it’s home. This will be my last port post. The next one will be after I get home (after Nov. 11th) and will cover our crossing and a review of the Nieuw Amsterdam. I hope you have enjoyed following us on our venture. Again, if there is something you want me to cover or have any questions just leave a comment at the end of any of the posts and I will reply.
Love You All,
