7. Croatia/Med./Ft. Laud. Air/Cruise – Plitvice Lakes National Park – Post 2

Hi All,

You’ve had enough of a rest so let’s get going.  This sign shows us a little over half way to the boat:

The lovely white birch trees are everywhere:

We finally arrived at the boat dock and found that the boat only went in one direction with passengers, toward the tip of the lake away from the hotels.  By this time we were very tired but decided to keep going and see it all.  Here’s a look at the lake with a boat coming in:

Here we are at the tip of the lake, just getting off the boat:

We feel at this point like it’s only a few hours to the finish, so after a coffee we start out walking the last part of the route.  We are walking along what becomes the River Korana into which the lakes drain.  What we didn’t know is that the further we walked along the river the steeper the cliffs on each side became, therefore the higher we had to climb to get our.

Here’s a shot down the river near the big lake:

Again, look at the clear water and the fish:

As we move along the river you can see the sides beginning to rise, while the river keeps going down.  Here are some of the falls (drops) along the river:

The sides of the river got higher and higher, and small caves like the one we see Susy in began to appear:

We were getting so tired we didn’t think we could finish the long walk, so with the map, and some advice from a guide, we saw that we were near a tram stop. The only problem was we had to climb up some stairs that went through a cave.  The sign at the beginning of the cave said this:

We didn’t realize it at the time but that sign says we had to climb up 80 meters (almost straight up).  Here’s some pictures looking up and down as we climbed through the cave:

Believe it or not we finally made it to the top.  I can’t tell you how tired we were.  The view from up above was beautiful:

That ended the tour.  We took the tram back to the hotel, got our car, checked into the second hotel, had dinner and fell into bed completely exhausted.  Regardless, we had done it, and that was enough.  It’s the outdoors at it’s best, but that’s enough for Susy and me.  Tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 9th we head out for the Istria Peninsula, and we hope a much quieter, easy time.  So until tomorrow,

Love You All,

Gary (alias Gagu)
